THE TIMES OF INDIA - RENIGUNTA MOVIE REVIEW

timesofindia.indiatimes.com - Telugu movie reviews Renigunta

The Times of India

STILL FROM THE MOVIE
Critic's Rating:
Cast: Johnny, Sanusha, Nishanth
Direction: Paneerselvam
Genre: Drama

Tip off: It is raw tale of revenge and love set in a small town of Renigunta. The excessive violence and the raw intensity of the film might not fly with the Telugu audience.

Movie Review: Renigunta is a Telugu dubbed version of the Tamil movie with the same title. The film has a bit of a split personality. It starts off as a revenge drama and evolves into a full blooded action movie in the second half. The director Paneerselvam has fitted in a cute romance as well so it's got all the elements that make up a regular Tollywood potboiler.

Johnny plays Sakthi, a youngster with ruffled hair, a hatred for studies and love for sports. When his parents, who dote on the youth, are killed by the local mafia leader after they witness his murders, Sakthi attempts revenge. But his amateurish attempt to kill the man responsible for his parents' murders fail and he is arrested and thrown in jail, where he makes friends with four rowdies played by Nishanth, Sandeep, Theeptti Ganeshan and Tamil. All four are accused of several murders. Fate drags them to Renigunta, where the four make a daring escape. The rest of the movie is spent with Sakthi torn between the love of his life, whom he meets in Renigunta, and the demands of the local mafia.

Sanyusha plays the love of the hero's life and she is among the few performers who do a good job in the movie. Her character, which is nameless in the film, may not be able to speak, but the actress ensures that she would be spoken of.

The music by Ganesh Raghavendra is loud and though the songs vary from middling to good, they are not shot well on film. The idea behind the movie directed by Paneerselvam, is to make people aware of how circumstances prevent today's youngsters from leading a normal life. But the message is obscured by commercial interests, mostly a need on the part of the filmmaker to shock audience with violence.

Technical departments, as always in Tamil cinema do better than their so-called creative counterparts. But the weak storyline and shoddy acting make the movie insipid, ennui-inducing affair.
